6th Grade Health Fair

We were excited to host our 4th Annual Sixth Grade Health Fair on Friday, April 22nd! The Hoisington Middle School 6th graders joined us for a fun afternoon dedicated to learning more about healthcare topics. Throughout the afternoon, the students visited several "stations" pertaining to specific topics. The areas they learned about were:

Respiratory Therapy

They discussed topics related to Smoking Cessation and the risks involved with smoking. The students were able to see "healthy" lungs in comparison to "smoker's" lungs by having an exhibit of pig lungs.

Nursing

We calculated the Body Mass Index of each student and also discussed the benefits of walking and exercise. Students were given a Clara Barton pedometer so they can track the number of steps they walk in a day.

Laboratory

A couple of days prior to the Health Fair, Lab staff went to the Middle School and various items at the school were cultured. Once the students arrived at this station, they could see how the bacteria had grown from the "everyday items" they use at school. They also learned about the importance of blood cells.

Radiology

The students toured the Radiology Department and got to see our new CT Machine. They also learned how technology has advanced in Radiology by seeing the difference between capturing an image on film versus digital technology.

Physical Therapy

We discussed back safety issues and also demonstrated the proper way to pack and carry a backpack. Additionally, we educated them on the signs of Scoliosis and the importance of correct posture.

Emergency Room

On display at this station were several pig hearts. We discussed the importance of the heart and the inner-workings of the heart. We also demonstrated an Auto Pulse machine which performs chest compressions on a patient in need.

Infection control

The importance of handwashing was shown at this station. The students applied Glo-Germ to their hands. After washing their hands, a black light was placed over their hands so they could see the germs that they missed.

Dietary

The last stop was with our Dietary Department where we talked about making healthy food choices. The students were surprised to see how much sugar was contained in items they eat or drink every day!

At Clara Barton Hospital, we always enjoy the opportunity to educate our community on healthcare topics!
